In the year 1982, Strategic Simulations, Inc. developed a Top-down perspective game by the name The Warp Factor. You can now play it online here.
The Warp Factor description
And again before us – a completely forgotten classic, this time just horrible, ancient, only slightly younger than the Pac-Man'.
This game is pretty much text (although the graphics your eyes will still appear!). But for a set of words and at first not too clear symbols and acronyms lies a whole world – the cruel world of future space, where five factions are between a brutal galactic war. The United Alliance of Planets, and Kurganskaya Romanska Empire, pirates, and rebels – and you can play for each side. In this war you have to manage a separate spacecraft, including small fighter planes (including unmanned) and large cruisers, space stations, and even bases; all familiar from science fiction movies and games (in the first place, incidentally, where later) the weapon of the future is also spot – lasers and phasers, disruptor and photon torpedoes.
Warp Factor is a tactical space combat simulator, not a strategy, so some overly ambitious and complicated gameplay here, though thinking and planning still have to build squadrons of ships and to design the ships themselves (setting their data), to track their various current indicators and to issue commands during battle.
Graphics, as mentioned above, there's more – your ships (in the background is absolutely black space) is presented not as icons or dots, and in the form of very small ships, traced much detail as was possible in 1982. And the main gift for lovers of antiquity surely will be able to design your own spaceships – after all, this game gave the opportunity for almost the first time.
To tell about this game can be a lot more, but in this case it is a quick overview fits most. Of course, Warp Factor today will seem hopelessly outdated. But this world is not open to everyone. He will entrust its secrets and its rugged beauty is only true once it started working, able to look at things is not only normal, but also with the inner eye.
